What is Gradient Yarn and Why Use It?
Gradient yarns are spun or dyed to create smooth transitions from one color to another. They are a fantastic option for projects like shawls, scarves, and other wearables, where you want a seamless shift from one hue to the next.
When working with mini skeins of gradient yarn, you can blend colors in creative ways or mix and match to create unique pieces. The Stonington crochet shawl is made with mini skeins I purchased at a fiber festival.

Why Use Mini Skeins for Crochet Projects?
Mini skeins (or mini hanks) are smaller amounts of yarn, typically around 20-25 grams each. Theyβre popular because they allow crafters to explore a variety of colors without having to commit to a full skein. Here are some great reasons to use mini skeins:
- Versatility: They work well for colorwork, stripes, and gradients, making them perfect for patterns like the Stonington Shawl.
- Cost-Effective: You get a lot of variety without needing to buy large quantities of each color.
- Creativity: Mini skeins encourage experimenting with color placement and combinations.
Why the Stonington Crochet Gradient Bias Shawl is Perfect for Gradient Sets

Its bias construction allows the colors to shift seamlessly from one end to the other, making it an ideal project for mini skeins. Whether you opt for a soft transition of pastels or a bold pop of contrasting shades, this shawl will let the yarn do all the talking.

Iβve never had a more rougher time getting a free pattern it took me an hour between the ads, reading through all the little extra than when I think I got it I have to sign up for you grow app. If your going to make something free let it it be free because I paid with an hour of my time and time is money.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I understand how viewing patterns on a mobile device can feel overwhelming, especially when there is a lot of scrolling involved.
I want to clarify that my website does not include more ads than other sites in the knitting and crochet space that are part of the Raptive network. The ad placement and quantity follow their recommended standards. That said, patterns can feel much longer and more ad-heavy on a phone than on a desktop or tablet, which is a common experience across most ad-supported pattern sites.
As for Grow, I use that tool to help protect my work as best I can from unauthorized copying and redistribution. It is one of the ways I try to balance offering free patterns while also safeguarding the time and effort that goes into creating them.
I completely agree with you about ads. I do not enjoy them either, which is why I try to always offer an ad-free PDF option when available. Purchasing the PDF removes the ads entirely and allows you to access the pattern in a clean, printable format.
I respect that this approach will not work for everyone, but it is what allows me to continue offering a large number of free patterns while keeping my business sustainable. I appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback.
